What are lice?
Head lice are parasitic insects that feed on human blood. They crawl — they don’t fly or jump.
How are lice spread?
Most often through direct head-to-head contact. Less often through shared brushes, hats, towels, or items recently in contact with someone who has lice.
Do they have preferences?
Anyone can get lice. Infestation has nothing to do with hair or home cleanliness. In children, close contact during play makes transmission easier.
When are they most common?
They can occur at any time of year. Close contact between children at school, kindergarten, camp, or during play makes spreading easier.
Can they be transmitted by animals?
No. Pets don’t get head lice and can’t pass them to humans.
Can they spread through pools and the sea?
Transmission through water is unlikely. Lice can survive underwater for a few hours. The risk mainly comes from close head-to-head contact and sharing personal items.
What causes the itching?
Itching is a reaction to lice saliva. On a first infestation it may not appear for several weeks. Not everyone with lice itches.
Do they spread diseases?
Head lice don’t spread diseases. Scratching, however, can cause small wounds and secondary bacterial infection.
Can they live away from the head?
They need human blood to survive. Without feeding, adult lice usually die within 1–2 days off the head.
What are nits?
Nits are lice eggs. They’re firmly attached to the hair shaft close to the scalp, about 0.8mm in size. Unlike dandruff, they don’t come off the hair easily.
How can we tell if nits are alive?
It’s hard to tell by appearance alone. Nits more than about 6mm from the scalp are usually already hatched or no longer viable. The surest sign of active infestation is finding a live louse.
How long does it take for a louse to hatch?
Eggs usually hatch in 6–9 days. Young lice reach maturity about a week after hatching, and the life cycle can continue.
